The Goldbergs is losing Jeff Garlin after multiple misconduct allegations and HR investigations.
Deadline reported that the long-running ABC comedy has reached a mutual agreement to have the veteran comedian not return to the show. The producers of the show, Sony Pictures Television, did not respond to a request for comment. Sony Pictures Television however previously stated, “The well-being of our cast and crew is of utmost importance to us. This is an employment matter and it is being addressed by HR and production” when the news of the incident broke earlier this month.
In a Vanity Fair article by Maureen Ryan published in early December, Garlin said, “No, I was not fired from The Goldbergs. I have not been fired from The Goldbergs.” He went on to say of the alleged complaint that it was “nothing physical by any stretch of the imagination. And the verbal part was a joke that was completely missed—because I like this guy.”
After the Vanity Fair Article, Deadline reportedly received messages from current Goldbergs employees documenting Garlin’s verbally and emotionally abusive behavior on set however reports of incidents on set range from allegedly Garlin using the word “vagina” to yelling at a camera operator and none have been confirmed.
The comedy lost another series regular earlier this year when George Segal passed away. With the shake-up to the cast, little is known what the future for the show will look like. However, the most recent season had already been filming at the time of Garlin’s departure.
The Goldbergs is ABC’s longest-running current comedy. The show premiered in 2013 making it slightly longer running than ABC’s other comedy hit, Black-ish, which premiered in 2014. While The Goldbergs is one of six sitcom comedies that ABC currently airs, three of the shows, Home Economics, The Wonder Years, and Abbott Elementary are new to the slate for 2021.
