For years now, BTS has ruled over Twitter like kings. The South Korean superstars have accrued an incredible 42 million very devoted followers, and they seem to go viral and rack up hundreds of thousands, if not millions of likes on everything they share to the social platform. It should come as no real surprise, then, that the band ends 2021 as one of the most successful names on the website in many different ways.
According to Twitter’s year-end recap, BTS concludes 2021 with the second-most-liked tweet of the year. The post is nothing more than a selfie from band member Jung Kook offering fans a kissing face, along with an emoji doing the same. The upload was liked by 3.2 million people all around the world, and it was quote-tweeted by nearly a quarter of a million fans. The singer’s tweet comes in behind only President Joe Biden’s post from the day he was inaugurated, which reads, simply, “It’s a new day in America.” That tweet was liked by four million people since it was shared on January 20.
The most retweeted upload from 2021 also comes from BTS, who used their fame for good when they addressed a pretty serious topic on Twitter. The K-pop idols took to their profile to offer condolences to the families of those who lost loved ones to anti-Asian violence, which surged in some countries throughout the year. The band opened up about the issues they have faced due to racism, even as the most beloved music group in the world. Their inspiring and heartfelt message was retweeted at least one million times.
As if these successes weren’t enough for BTS to truly rule over Twitter in 2021, their own name also stands out as the most used hashtag of the year.
The South Korean all-male vocal act didn’t just conquer Twitter in 2021, they also owned charts all around the world, proving that they can deliver spectacular music the masses need to hear in addition to highly-viral content. The septet scored three No. 1 hits on the Hot 100 in America, with their own “Butter,” “Permission to Dance” and their collaboration with Coldplay, “My Universe,” all opening in first place. They only doled out a few tunes this year, and they didn’t reach the top 10 with their sole album (which was aimed at the Japanese market anyway), but BTS still managed to prove their immense popularity and power throughout the year, just as they may do so again in 2022.
