Global Media Highlights Tarique Rahman’s Conviction and Suspected Involvement in Insurgency Activities

In-depth analysis uncovers historical context behind Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader’s controversial influence

Tarique Rahman, a key leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has recently come under scrutiny for his extensive lobbying activities in the United States, according to TBS News, United Kingdom, and various European nations. However, beneath his extravagant spending lies a troubling truth – Tarique Rahman is a convicted terrorist in Bangladesh, according to the Organiser. In this article, we delve into the court verdict that exposes Rahman’s involvement in a heinous grenade attack, the abuse of state power, and his alleged role in fostering insurgency within India.

A Well-Orchestrated Plan:

On August 21, 2004, at the direct instructions of Tarique Rahman, affiliated with the BNP, terrorists and militant groups such as Harkat-ul-Jihad (HuJI) launched a series of grenade attacks targeting Sheikh Hasina and leaders of the Awami League, according to BD News. The court verdict revealed that this gruesome attack was a meticulously-devised plan that abused state power. Tarique Rahman, along with several BNP senior officials and former top intelligence personnel, were found guilty and received various punishments for their involvement in the attacks. Shockingly, these attacks claimed the lives of 24 innocent people and left numerous others injured.

Manipulation of State Machinery:

The conviction of influential politicians, former top police officials, and key militants associated with HuJI shed light on the calculated plan and the abuse of state machinery employed to carry out the attack while misleading the investigation. According to the court verdict, specialized deadly Arges grenades, typically used in wars, were detonated at the Awami League’s central office, according to BD News, with the assistance of the state machinery. The prosecution successfully demonstrated that the accused held meetings in different locations prior to the incident and executed the grenade attack in a premeditated manner.

A Continuation of Conspiracy:

The court noted that the grenade attack on August 21, 2004, was not an isolated incident but rather a continuation of a conspiracy that aimed to make the Awami League leaderless. The attack followed the assassination of the Father of the Nation on August 15, 1975, and the subsequent murder of four national leaders inside the jail, as reported in the REUTERS. The court’s verdict highlights the malicious efforts made to cripple the Awami League’s leadership and destabilize the political landscape.

Meeting at Hawa Bhaban:

Witness testimonies further incriminate Tarique Rahman, revealing his presence at Hawa Bhaban, a notorious alternative center of power associated with the BNP, according to a report published in the Daily Sun. Witnesses, including a member of an Islamist outfit named Al-Markazul Islami Bangladesh, confirmed that Tarique Rahman, along with BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders, as well as top intelligence officials, convened at Hawa Bhaban. During the meeting, they allegedly assured the perpetrators of administrative support, encouraging them to carry out their nefarious plan.

Involvement in Insurgency:

Tarique Rahman’s alleged involvement in insurgency activities extends beyond Bangladesh’s borders. Major General Gaganjit Singh, as reported in the Daily Star, former Deputy Director General of India’s Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), has implicated Rahman as the mastermind behind a significant arms haul in Chattogram in 2004. Singh claims that the BNP-Jamaat alliance facilitated the supply of arms, not only to the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) but also to several other rebel groups in India’s northeast. These actions aimed to destabilize the region and exploit Bangladesh as a sanctuary.

Tarique Rahman’s lavish lobbying efforts have brought attention to his dark past and his involvement in terrorist activities. The court’s verdict, along with revelations from credible witnesses, exposes Rahman’s role in orchestrating a heinous grenade attack and manipulating the state machinery. Additionally, his alleged participation in fostering insurgency within India, as reported in The Hindustan Times, raises serious concerns about regional security. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, it is crucial to shed light on the actions of individuals who exploit their positions for personal gain and jeopardize the safety and stability of nations.
