Topline

With no live broadcast, no red carpet and a minimal in-person ceremony, Sunday’s 2022 Golden Globes Awards put on by the controversy-marred Hollywood Foreign Press Association will look different than the grand festivities of years’ prior—but we’ll update the list of winners right here.

Key Facts

Though the Golden Globes will be held at the Beverly Hills Hotel, only select HFPA members and awardees were in attendance—The HFPA told Forbes last week the ceremony would be a “private event” and winners would be announced on social media and through their website.

The ceremony, which honors work in movies and television, usually serves as the kickoff for awards season, and is considered by many in the entertainment industry to be a barometer for the upcoming Academy Awards in March—though as Vox and CNBC pointed out last year, the winners usually don’t line up because the Globes are structured differently and have a much smaller voting pool.

Belfast and The Power Of The Dog each received seven nominations, making them the most-nominated movies and frontrunners for trophies; Succession was the most-nominated TV series.

Key Background

NBC, which usually broadcasts the Golden Globes, announced in May it would not air the 2022 ceremony after it was alleged in a Los Angeles Times expose that HFPA did not have any Black members and that some of its members engaged in unethical behavior, like taking lavish gifts from producers in return for backing certain shows or films, leading studios including Netflix and Amazon to boycott the organization. In response, HFPA welcomed six Black members amid a new class of 21 and announced a new partnership with the NAACP with several initiatives, including to foster the careers of young Black entertainers and journalists. The Golden Globes could return to NBC next year: the network said they would broadcast the 2023 ceremony if the HFPA “executes on its plan” for real change.

Tangent

The Golden Globes aren’t the only awards ceremony in flux this year. The Grammy Awards, which were scheduled to be held in-person on January 31, announced last week that the ceremony will be postponed because of rising Covid-19 cases. Several smaller award shows, like the Critics Choice Awards, have also postponed their ceremonies, taking back hope that awards season could return to pre-pandemic normalcy this year.
