Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut appeared on MSNBC Monday morning to debate President Donald Trump’s outsized army response to protests in opposition to immigration raids in Los Angeles.
“Donald Trump only cares about protests when they’re opposing him. Every single day we should be reminding the American public that there were protesters at the Capitol fighting for Donald Trump to install him in power permanently on January 6 of 2021, who beat the hell out of police officers with metal poles and tasers and are out on the street today,” he mentioned.
Murphy added that Trump’s unbalanced strategy to energy, sending within the Nationwide Guard regardless of state and native regulation enforcement’s objections, is “fundamentally undemocratic,” and a harmful endorsement of violence.
“The message is simply, if you’re violent in service of a Republican cause, you’ll get a ‘Get Out of Jail Free’ card. But if you’re engaged in protest against the administration, well then we’re sending in the National Guard,” he continued.
On Jan. 6, 2021, Trump refused to deploy the Nationwide Guard, whilst violence from his “Stop the Steal” rally was an rebellion within the U.S. Capitol. The Home choose committee later uncovered proof that his administration meant for the Nationwide Guard for use solely to “protect pro Trump people.”
Since returning to energy, Trump has pardoned 1000’s of Jan. 6 insurrectionists convicted of taking part in an act of terrorism and conspiracy in opposition to the USA. He’s even floated the thought of financially rewarding them for his or her position in trying to overturn the democratic course of.
Trump’s selective use of drive and his sample of threatening and punishing dissent whereas defending the prison conduct of his allies highlights simply how harmful he’s to democracy.
