What work trends are you noticing that will impact the future? originally appeared on Quora: the place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world.
Answer by Peter Johnston, Founder and CEO of Polywork, on Quora:
There are several interesting trends that are bubbling up that all point to a more flexible future of work. Remote work has been a massive factor in the evolution of work the past few years, giving flexibility to employees in terms of where and when they work. We’ve also seen an increase in employees’ demanding more from their employers – more pay, more benefits and even more flexibility. If their demands aren’t being met, it turns into dissatisfied employees that have started “quiet quitting”—people are sick of going above and beyond for one job that doesn’t fuel their whole selves and are doing the bare minimum.
But we’re also seeing another similar trend—quiet polyworking. Now that people have the flexibility in their job to pursue other passions during the work day, many people started working a second job or engaged in other projects, sometimes unbeknownst to their employer. Companies need to start allowing polyworking or risk losing their most ambitious employees. In the future, if a company doesn’t have this flexibility, they will be severely limited in their talent pool because a large majority of the world will be polyworking.
